Chapter Eleven
Ellie woke in a small hospital room in Rovinj. She was in a ward of six beds, and the smell of antiseptic was strong, but she was pleased to see she was the only one in the large room. When she looked around, she saw Jonathan talking to a doctor in the doorway to the hall. When he saw she was awake, he quickly walked to her bedside and sat down in the chair, moving aside his jacket, which appeared to have been rolled into the shape of a small pillow. From the appearance of his tussled hair and the dark circles under his eyes, it was obvious he had been sitting there for a while.
âHow long have I been here?â she asked in a low, slurred voice.
âOnly a few hours. They did full X-rays, and nothing is broken. You have a minor concussion, but they said you can leave after a few more hours of rest.â
Ellie slowly tried to sit up but grabbed her head as the room began to spin.
âWhoa.â Jonathan grabbed her shoulders to steady her, then eased her back down on the bed. âWhere do you think youâre going?â
âI need to go back to the ship to tell the girls what happened. And I need to call Jason, heâll be concerned about me.â
âDonât worry about the girls, and I called Jason from your phone. I explained what happened. We had a nice chat,â he smiled as he spoke. âHeâs worried I may be bad for you.â When she squinted her eyes and looked at him, he continued, âWell, he didnât say that, but I could hear it in his voice.â
âThatâs ridiculous. You had nothing to do with today. Whoever ran me off the road and ran us off the road before was after me, not you.â
âThat may be true, Ellie, but clearly, their goal has something to do with me. They know you are special to me.â
âJust how much did you tell Jason about ourâ¦â She hesitated, looking into his eyes. âWhat is it that we are?â
âWe are something, I know.â He leaned down to her and kissed her gently on the lips. âI need to make some calls. Iâll be back in a few hours to take you back to the ship.â
When he left Ellie at the hospital, she had drifted off to sleep. He took a cab back to the ship and called his chief of security back in San Diego. His investigator, Frank Reynolds, caught him up on the background of the Century ride in Las Vegas where Ellie was injured. The event had been sponsored by a variety of cycling apparel and equipment companies as well as a local shop, McCannâs Cycling. McCannâs had supervised the overnight storage of the bikes left before the Century race. But he had been unable to determine the names of the actual workers. Since it was several years ago and most of the workers were volunteers, the information would be hard to track down. He planned to continue to pursue the local cycling clubs and membership.
